Restaurants and Shopping

For a small city, Ann Arbor has an eclectic mix of restaurants serving a diverse array of international cuisines.

Ann Arbor’s downtown area, which includes what has been called one of the 25 Best Main Streets in America by Travel and Leisure, has many shops and a diverse collection of restaurants. The Central and North Campus areas also reflect the international population of the city, with numerous restaurants specializing in Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Ethiopian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Vietnamese, Turkish, Polish, Korean, Cuban, Italian, Indian, Greek, Burmese, and Irish food, among others. Additionally, many restaurants use organic and local ingredients, and quite a few provide extensive information on their meat and vegetable sources. Ann Arbor has quite a few vegetarian restaurants, and many provide extensive vegan and gluten-free options, too.

Ann Arbor’s food culture is evident in the local grocery store selection, as well. In addition to the usual supermarket chains, Ann Arbor favorites include two Whole Foods, a Trader Joe’s, Arbor Farms, a local grocery store similar to Whole Foods, and Plum Market. You will also find many small specialty food stores throughout the city, such as the Produce Station and Morgan and York, and numerous stores offering Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and Middle Eastern foods. Finally, Ann Arbor offers several farmers markets, the biggest and oldest of which is the Ann Arbor Farmers Market in Kerrytown, which takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Other farmers markets in the city include the Tuesday evening market at Cobblestone Farms, the Westside Farmers Market on Thursday evenings, and the Dixboro Farmers Market on Friday evenings.
