Family Activities

For our Institute guests who are bringing their families to town, we believe you will find Ann Arbor to be a very child-friendly city. Nearly all of the events listed on this page, particularly Top of the Park and the Fourth of July parade, are very family friendly. Many other local attractions are also geared toward children. The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum offers four floors of activities for children. Domino’s Farms is a petting farm with hayrides and pony rides. The Matthaei Botanical Gardens includes a large area of outdoor, garden-centered activities for children. Also, many of Ann Arbor’s 157 city parks mentioned above have play structures for children, as does County Farm Park.

For a bit of whimsy, Ann Arbor is home to a network of fairy doors built into downtown businesses, and a rite of passage for local children is to take the Fairy Door tour. This local phenomenon has received media attention near and far, including an article in the Washington Post.
