Health Services Information
University Health Service, 207 Fletcher Street
During the summer the University Health Service Office is open MWTF from 8:00AM-4:30PM; Th. from 9:00AM-4:30 PM; Sat. 8:00AM-NOON; and closed Sundays.
The University Health Services health office is where you should go for minor to medium ailments: sprained ankles, colds, etc. If you plan on going to the health office, you can just walk in, but it will make the process quicker if you call ahead and make an appointment (734-936-6643).
Of course, for emergencies dial 911 and go to the University of Michigan Hospital. The health office accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield and Blue Care Network.
The health office will bill outside insurance, but cannot guarantee that the insurance company will work with UHS (all normal co-pays apply). If you have any questions, call your insurance company and ask them if they work with UHS before you make an appointment (if you do this, make sure that you inquire about University Health Services at 207 Fletcher, not the University Hospital). If you do not have insurance, or it is not accepted, you may pay your bill out of pocket. They estimate that most visits cost between $50-$200. If you have any further questions about billing, call 734-764-7380.
About health insurance: We strongly recommend that you purchase health insurance for the duration of your stay at the Linguistic Institute, as the Institute and the University of Michigan are not responsible for any medical costs incurred while you are here. Information about short-term health insurance is available at the link below. U-M does not endorse the health insurance provider connected to this link: http://www.ehealthinsurance.com/short-term-health-insurance/find-coverage/
Computer and Printing Information
Click here for login, internet, and printing information.
Login information
Based on the information participants provided in registering for the Institute, we have created UM login names (called uniqnames) for each participant. Your uniqname and password should be on the sheet you receive at the registration desk. Even if you plan to use a non-UM email address while you’re at the Institute, you will need this uniqname for many campus functions, including accessing the course sites that will be set up for your classes and logging on to University computers.
Please change your password as soon as possible. You can do that under the “Uniqnames and passwords” bullet at this site: http://www.itcs.umich.edu/your-account/.
Note: If you have ever had a UM uniqname before, but your account has since been deactivated, we are unable to access your password. In order to get a new password, you will need to call the ITS help line at 734-764-HELP(4357). They will ask you some questions to verify your identity and verbally give you a new password.
Instructions for Connecting to the Internet
You have two options for wirelessly connecting to the internet on Michigan’s campus: MWireless and UM Wireless Network. MWireless uses WPA2-Enterprise to allow access to the network and to provide strong security, including data encryption. According to the University, MWireless is the more secure and thus the preferred method for WiFi connections.
To connect to MWireless:
1. Turn on your computer or network device.
2. Turn on the WiFi connection for your device.
3. Associate with the MWireless network.
4. When prompted, enter your UM uniqname and password.
To connect to UM Wireless Network:
1. Turn on your computer or network device.
2. Turn on the WiFi connection for your device.
3. Associate with the UM Wireless Network SSID.
4. Open a web browser and try to access any external web page (e.g., www.google.com)
5. You will automatically be directed to the login page. Locate the login box in the upper-left corner of the page.
6. Enter your UM uniqname and password, and click the Log In button. You will be automatically directed to the web page you originally requested and have access to the network.
If you cannot successfully connect to either of these networks after following the above steps, please contact the ITS Service Center: 734-764-HELP (764-4357), 4HELP@umich.edu, http://its.umich.edu/help/. They’re available M-F, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. (phone and email); Sun, 1-5 p.m. (email). Or, if you are able to use the internet on a phone or a Michigan computer, follow the detailed instructions provided at http://www.itcom.itd.umich.edu/wireless/connect/.
Printing
Participants of the Linguistic Institute will be set up with printing privileges that allow for 500 free black and white prints. You can print at any of the SITES computing areas on campus (list of locations) or to the printers in the Linguistic Institute Business Office in 2436 Mason Hall (instructions for accessing these printers will be available in the Business Office.)
CTools
CTools is a learning management system that allows participants to access files, upload assignments and information, receive announcements for the class, and participate in class forums depending on how the instructor configures the site. Faculty instructions for using CTools can be found here.
Instructors can place a request to reserve course materials in the University Reserves database by selecting the “Linguistics Summer Institute” as the department and manually adding the three digit number that is assigned to the CTools for their course. You can also email university.reserves@umich.edu to place a request.
Libraries
Hatcher Graduate Library and Shapiro Undergraduate Library are conveniently located on the diagonal (Diag) near Mason Hall, where most of the institute courses will be held. Hatcher’s hours are 8am-12am Monday through Thursday, 8am -7pm on Friday, 10am to 6pm on Saturday, and 2pm to 12 am on Sunday. Shapiro will be open 24 hours (except for the July 4th holiday) and has group study rooms available by reservation or on a first-come/first-served basis. Shapiro also houses the Askwith Media Library which holds over 25,000 titles, including feature films, documentaries, animated films, and instructional programs.
There are a number of other libraries worth investigating for their special collections and quiet study areas.
